Dr Laurent Hochart is a highly experienced General Surgeon who has recently relocated his practice to Mediclinic Vereeniging. With a global career spanning three decades, Dr Hochart brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise in various surgical disciplines to his new role.
Dr Hochart's medical journey began at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium, where he earned his Docteur en Medecine, Chirurgie et Accouchements in 1991. His pursuit of excellence in surgery led him to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Ireland in 1997 and later a Fellow of the College of Surgeons in South Africa in 2003.
His residency included diverse experiences, starting as a Registrar in General Surgery in Durban, South Africa, from 1991 to 1995. He then moved to the UK, where he served as an SHO in surgery at Stockton-On-Tees and as a Locum Surgical Registrar at a Frenchay Hospital in Bristol in 1997. Dr Hochart returned to Durban to complete his senior Registrar in surgery tenure from 1998 to 2003.
Throughout his training and subsequent practice, Dr. Hochart gained extensive experience in the preoperative and operative care of trauma patients and elective pathologies. His rotations in various busy services provided him with significant exposure to paediatric surgery, vascular surgery, urology, and general surgery, including tropical surgical pathologies.
After qualifying, Dr Hochart worked as a private surgeon in Durban before moving to Canada, where he practiced for 12 years. Posts he held there included Specialist Surgeon at the Regional Hospital Swift Current in Saskatchewan and East Kootenay Regional Hospital in Cranbrook, British Columbia (BC).
He also provided consultation services and outreach clinics with Creston Valley Hospital and Invermere Hospital in BC. While in Canada, he honed his skills in hernia repairs, colorectal surgery, and endoscopies, both therapeutic and diagnostic. He also developed expertise in minimally invasive surgery (MIS), including laparoscopic colectomies, and has substantial experience in phlebology, surgical and sclerotherapies.
Dr Hochart's commitment to education was also evident during his time at Cranbrook, where he taught UBC surgical residents and medical students.
In South Africa, his recent positions include Specialist Surgeon roles at Melomed Gatesville Hospital, Netcare Sunward Park Hospital, Netcare Linmed Hospital, Lakeview Hospital in the East Rand, Mediclinic Upington, and Netcare Kingsway Hospital, south of Durban.
His professional interests include hernia management, varicose veins, and upper and lower endoscopies, with a focus on colorectal screening programs and elective as well as emergency colonic procedures. He is also keen on expanding his laparoscopic skills to colorectal procedures.
Now at Mediclinic Vereeniging, Dr Hochart’s vast experience and skills are at the disposal of patients in the southern Gauteng city, the surrounding Vaal Triangle and beyond.
Out of work hours, Dr Hochart is an avid jogger, cyclist, and pilot, reflecting his dedication to maintaining a balanced lifestyle and his passion for exploring new challenges.
